Thales has been present in India since 1953. Headquartered in Noida, the company has other operational offices and sites in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune among others. 2000 employees are working with Thales and its joint ventures in India. Since the beginning, Thales has been playing an essential role in India’s growth story by sharing its technologies and expertise in Defence, Transport, Aerospace and Digital Identity & Security markets. Thales has two engineering competence centres in India with more than 1,400 engineers – one in Delhi NCR focused on digital identity and security business, while the one in Bengaluru focuses on defence and aerospace business.
India’s “Make in India” policy is fully supported by Thales. Our strategy of developing industrial footprint in India is in line with the government’s aim to develop the defence base of the country. With this as the backdrop, Thales has formed various co-operative partnerships with public and private sector industries, bringing in its expertise in delivering high-end technology solutions.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL): Thales has been working closely with HAL for over 50 years. We provide high-end avionics to equip the platforms that HAL designs.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL): Incorporated in August 2014 as BEL-Thales Systems Limited (BTSL), this JV is dedicated to civilian and select ground-based military radars.
Reliance Aerostructure Limited: Created in 2017, this JV with Reliance Aerostructure leverages Thales’ offset commitment as part of the Rafale contract, developing Indian capabilities to integrate and maintain Radar and Electronic Warfare sensors. Other Cooperations include Bharat Dynamics Limited, a Government of India enterprise, Kalyani Group and MKU among others.
Growing with universities: Thales is partnering with the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) of India since 2022 and IIIT Delhi since 2021 for advanced collaborative research and development in the field of Open Hardware. The Group is also partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore for jointly supervised PhD fellowship programmes over the past years.
Engineering Competence Centres in India
India is a strong pillar of Engineering for Thales with a highly skilled workforce. Thales has expanded its presence in the country through the development of Group Engineering Competence Centres (ECC) in India, reinforcing its position as a leader in all its markets.
Engineering Competence Centre in Delhi NCR: This ECC is focused on Digital Identity and Security business of Thales covering data protection & encryption, cybersecurity, IoT and biometrics, among others. We have a 24x7 technical support team based in Noida to support our worldwide customers in important sectors such as government, healthcare, banks, airlines and more for our Cloud Protection line of business.
Engineering Competence Centre in Bengaluru: This ECC was launched in 2019 and is the first of its kind in India that focuses on hardware, software and systems engineering capabilities for both the civil and defence sectors, serving global needs. It specializes in defence and aerospace, and is working on high-value software areas such as air traffic management, complex avionics systems, cockpit, flight management, connectivity & video systems, and radar software.
Aerospace in India
Thales is present in India's civilian aerospace. Thales is present in the civilian aerospace sector with the following references, including retrofit of avionics and In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) to Air India (Airbus and Boeing fleets, critical avionics to low cost airline IndiGo and Jet Airways, as well as Navigational aids to Airport Authority of India.
Defence in India
Thales has signed major contracts with the Indian Ministry of Defence. Thales provides a number of state-of-the-art equipment and systems aboard the Rafale. These include the provision of RBE2 AESA radar, the Spectra electronic warfare system, optronics, the communication navigation and identification system (CNI), the majority of the cockpit display systems, power generation systems and a logistics support component.
Digital Identity and Security in India
Thales has a strong presence in India serving the needs of the country from payment to enterprise security and the internet of things (IoT) – enabling businesses and governments to deliver secure digital services for billions of individuals and things. Our engineering competence centre in Delhi-NCR is based in two locations - Noida, which is focused on the Digital Identity and Security business, and Gurugram, which is an extension of this line of business with a specialization in managing real-time big data analytics.
Transportation in India
Thales is a long-standing partner of public transport in India with systems in operation both in metros and on main lines. In September 2014, Thales was awarded a signalling contract by Southern Railway to supply an ETCS Level 1 solution (TPWS: Train Protection and Warning System) on the Basin Bridge-Arakkonam section, in Southern India. Thales has also been the electronic axle counters supplier of Indian Railways since 1999.
