Control of the airspace is harder than ever. Airspace is now contested at every altitude, by a wide range of threats – from low-cost drones to hypersonic missiles, electronic warfare and cyber threats. Modern air defence must counter simultaneous, coordinated attacks: hypersonic glide vehicles, stealthy cruise missiles, massed UAV swarms, electronic warfare and cyber intrusions. Decision time is shrinking from minutes to seconds — leaving traditional, siloed systems struggling to keep up.

Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) is the heart of a nation’s defence strategy

Having sovereign control over the design, development and deployment of all elements of IAMD gives nations the ability to be as secure and effective as possible: from proactive intelligence-gathering in times of peace, to early warning of emerging threats, and fast and decisive response in times of crisis.

Thales knows exactly what is needed to achieve and maintain operational sovereignty. In particular, we understand the vital importance of solutions that work across all domains: land, sea, air, space and cyberspace

Integrating systems for effectiveness

IAMD offers the opportunity to replace fragmented and siloed systems with a networked approach: connecting sensors, decision tools and effectors into one resilient, layered system that maximises coverage and ensures the right response, at the right time.

Any sensor → the right decision→ best effector

We only consider that a system is fully integrated when everything is connected, interoperable, and responses are fast, flexible and seamless. When any effector, from long range missile capabilities to agile UAVs, can benefit from the information gathered from any sensor.

In the Air Defence domain, one of Thales' main strengths remains the fact that we are a system integrator, with years of experience and expertise  - no matter what legacy systems. Thales offers, develops and delivers solutions that are fully interoperable with existing systems with the goal of the sovereignty of a nation.

Strengthening the key pillars

Full integration is achieved when the three key elements of defence – Detection, Decision, Neutralisation – work together flexibly and seamlessly to detect, decide, deploy and destroy all potential airspace threats.

Building customised solutions

Thales acts as a trusted advisor and is deeply committed in assisting nations develop the most effective IAMD solutions through the development of sovereign assets, an integrated approach with legacy and third party solutions, while also developing local talent.

The increasing flexibility and value of digital solutions offers nations a greater opportunity for continuous system effectiveness and enhanced security through cyber technology.

… Preparing for tomorrow

Artificial intelligence brings a breakthrough in terms of a systems performance, responsiveness, and adaptability, by enhancing target detection and classification capabilities, as well as assisting in orchestrating the means of detection and neutralisation. AI particularly enables the management of complexity in high-intensity contexts.

Trusted AI: Our cortAIx platform accelerates classification and engagement while maintaining transparency and human oversight.

Effective IAMD covers:

  • Multi-domain sensing: Long-range radars, passive and space-based sensors stitched into a single picture.
  • Intelligent C2: AI-enabled tools process hundreds of feeds, highlight what matters, and give commanders transparent recommendations — with humans always in control.
  • Effectors for multilayered air defence: From ground-based missiles to directed energy and electronic warfare, commanders get the right-cost, right-effect response.
