Thales had the opportunity to participate in panel discussions during Biometrics Institute meetings in Brussels (the ID@Borders & Future of Travel Conference) and Singapore (Biometrics Institute Meeting, Biometrics Now and in the Future) earlier this year on these very topics. Key individuals from government agencies, regulators and technology leaders explored what this transformation means in practice – from Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) and Entry/Exit Systems (EES) to seamless travel and trusted biometric verification.
One message stood out clearly: the future of travel will depend on trusted, interoperable and secure digital identity systems capable of balancing security, privacy and passenger experience.

Building trust in digital identity
As border ecosystems become more connected, there’s a growing pressure to verify identities quickly, accurately and securely - often in real time.
For border authorities, this challenge is particularly acute. Identity verification must support both operational efficiency and national security, whilst also adapting to evolving regulatory frameworks and increasing traveller flows.
Discussions around the European Entry/Exit System (EES) highlighted the scale of this transformation. Across the industry, governments are moving towards more integrated border infrastructures that combine biometric verification, document authentication and digital identity management into a unified ecosystem.
EES replaces manual stamping of passports for third-country nationals with automated biometric registration, including fingerprints and facial image. This data must be encrypted and transmitted in near real-time to the central eu-LISA-managed EES database. Deployments must support fast enrolment throughput, robust liveness detection, identity verification against national and European systems, and secure integration with systems such as ETIAS, SIS, and VIS.
This requires more than standalone technologies. It depends on robust interoperability between front-end passenger experiences and resilient back-end systems capable of managing data securely and at scale.

Biometrics and the challenge of “proof of presence”
The rise of AI-generated identities, deepfakes and increasingly advanced fraud techniques is reshaping the security landscape for physical and digital identity.
At both events, industry discussions focused on how organisations can strengthen trust in identity verification systems while maintaining seamless user experiences. Sessions explored morph detection, liveness detection and AI-assisted biometric checks as part of broader efforts to combat emerging threats.
Biometrics remain one of the most effective tools for establishing trusted “proof of presence” because biometric identifiers are inherently linked to an individual.
However, ensuring trust in biometric systems requires a layered approach.
Advanced facial recognition, fingerprint and iris technologies must be supported by:

From actual EES implementation and future Digital Travel Credentials to AI-assisted border checks and seamless travel initiatives, the industry is entering a period of rapid transformation.
For governments and border authorities, the challenge now is to build systems that are not only secure and interoperable, but also trusted by the people using them.
The future of travel will depend on getting that balance right.
