Sabena technics and Thales to upgrade CN-235 tactical transport and logistics aircraft for French Air and Space Force

As part of France’s military air fleet modernisation, the consortium of Sabena technics and Thales has been awarded a contract by the French defence procurement agency (DGA) to upgrade the avionics of the CN-235 aircraft operated by the French Air and Space Force.

The CN-235 is a versatile aircraft used for tactical missions, such as paratrooper and equipment drops, as well as medical evacuation and other public service operations. The upgrade will provide state-of-the-art avionics, ensuring compliance with Single European Sky standards and allowing seamless integration into non-segregated airspace. The modernization will also enhance fleet availability, operational efficiency, and extend the aircraft’s service life.

Sabena technics will lead the project, performing mechanical and electrical modifications and integrating the new avionics. Thales will supply the TopStarC GPS receiver, an inertial navigation system, and latest-generation avionics derived from the TopDeck suite, which is already certified on nearly 800 civil and military aircraft. The upgrade will also include Thales' advanced radio altimeter, designed to resist 5G interference, ensuring safe and high-performance navigation.

Several Thales facilities in Bordeaux, Brive, Châtellerault, Toulouse, Valence, and Vendôme, as well as Sabena technics’ site in Dinard, will be involved in the project.
