A secure, adaptable, and future-ready eID solution

The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board has officially launched new electronic identity (eID) cards, marking a major milestone in modernizing Estonia’s renowned digital identity programme. Developed in partnership with Thales under an eight-year contract, this next-generation solution encompasses the full lifecycle management of national identity documents, from issuance to personalization and ongoing support, for residents, citizens, diplomats, or refugees.

These advanced eID cards incorporate cutting-edge embedded security technologies designed to safeguard sensitive personal data and digital transactions. A standout feature is their OS agility: the cards’ operating systems can be remotely updated to counter emerging cyber threats and evolving cybersecurity risks, all without the need for physical card replacement. Fully compliant with eIDAS regulations, Estonia’s new eID cards facilitate secure, seamless access to a broad spectrum of public and private digital services across Europe, reinforcing cross-border interoperability.

This initiative not only strengthens Estonia’s trusted digital identity infrastructure but also empowers citizens with reliable, convenient, and flexible documents, supporting inclusion and fostering trust for all stakeholders.
