Thales will undertake the modifications of the ERTMS (Levels 1 & 2) installations, communications and energy for the new Chamartín station

The contracting for the modification by Thales of the ERTMS (Level 1& 2) (European Rail Traffic Management System) installations, telecommunications and energy of the high speed area in Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor station, awarded by Adif Alta Velocidad, is necessary for the new design of the station. This remodeling will lead to an important increase in capacity for the station in terms of traffic as well as train movement and passengers, since it will involve a total of six additional tracks for High-Speed and a new building for controlling them. When the works are completed Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor will be Spain’s largest railway station and one of Europe’s largest.
Seeking to incentivize the use of rail as an essential, sustainable and safe means of transport and to create a European-wide single market, 14 December 2020 saw the liberalization of passenger rail transport, which ushered in new operators in high-speed and long-distance services in Spain. This undertaking requires the installation of ERTMS Level 2, the European Rail Traffic Management System in Spain.
The new design of the Chamartín station, which aims to increase its capacity for standard gauge traffic and thus meet the demand associated with the liberalization of passenger transport, makes it necessary to modify the ERTMS, communications and energy facilities , a work awarded to Thales for 8,664,295 euros (VAT included). Thales, a High Speed technology leader, has extensive experience in this system, the most recent example being the Zamora-Pedralba high-speed section, part of the Madrid-Galicia High-Speed Corridor. Thales’ experience in this type of track goes back 30 years, with the Madrid-Seville AVE signalling.
In the case of the new Chamartín station, Thales will provide the modification of the installations for the ERTMS train protection system (levels 1 and 2) to adapt it to the new High-Speed routing. Thales will also be responsible for the fixed telecommunications systems, specifically the expansion of the communications fit-out (in phase 1) as well as the fit-out for the new technical building (in phase 2), where the equipment is replicated and from which the communications of all of the station’s High-Speed tracks are controlled.
Thales is also responsible of the energy systems. The energy installations will be modified and new energy equipment will be installed, together with Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), connections and cables that feed the signalling, telecommunications and ancillary equipment. Thales is responsible for safety & security and the supervision of the new installations too.
Reorganizing Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor is a major rail milestone thanks to suppose a considerable increase in its capacity in terms of traffic, movement of trains and passengers.
