A new digital identity for Europeans
Thales, a leader in cybersecurity and digital identification solutions, has been chosen alongside 167 other partners to co-construct the future European digital identity portfolio.
Making it possible for European Union citizens, institutions and businesses to validate their digital identity securely, free of charge and in just a few clicks, by 2026 - this is what is provided for in the eIDAS-2 regulation (Electronic identification and trust services), which entered into force in May 2024. This new right involves the implementation of a flagship device: the e-wallet, or digital wallet, a single application that centralises all of a user’s personal information under a single digital identity.
With a recognised know-how in the field of online identity protection (strong authentication, biometric solutions...) and data security (cryptography, protection of online transactions...), Thales’ Cybersecurity and Digital Identity (CDI) division has been chosen to participate in the POTENTIAL project (Pilots for the European digital identity wallet), as part of the DEP1.
The Thales teams are working alongside the other 167 consortium partners on a prototype e-wallet, as part of six use cases (electronic public services, account opening, SIM card registration, mobile driver’s licence, remote qualified electronic signature, and electronic prescription). The aim is to provide millions of citizens with cutting-edge solutions that will contribute to Europe’s digital sovereignty.
