The State of Alaska Partners with Thales in Launching First Mobile ID App for Citizens
- Considered as a digital companion to the driver license and ID card provided by Thales, the Alaska Mobile ID empowers Alaskans to prove their identity and age, as well as manage the use of their digital credentials seamlessly and securely from their smartphones.
- Thousands of citizens currently have the Alaska Mobile ID app, which can be used wherever digital ID technology is accepted worldwide – including with TSA at selected airports.
- Leveraging Thales’ leadership in digital ID management and cybersecurity, the Alaska Mobile ID app is powered by state-of-the-art technologies that prioritize user privacy and data security.
Thales is pleased to announce its continued partnership with the State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with the launch of the Alaska Mobile ID. Seen as an innovative digital identity solution, it empowers residents to manage the use of their identification credentials securely and conveniently through their mobile devices.
The Alaska Mobile ID leverages Thales' sophisticated digital ID technology to provide Alaskans with a secure method for digital verification of their identity, age, and/or driving privileges. With this ‘cybersecurity by design’ solution, citizens benefit from a quick and secure way to digitally verify their identity while safeguarding their personal information. It also enables selective disclosure, meaning only some attributes of residents’ identities can be electronically verified. As an example, with Alaska Mobile ID, residents will be able to prove they are above 21 without revealing their exact age, which is impossible with physical ID.
Citizens across Alaska can now register for their Alaska Mobile ID remotely, from the comfort of their homes. By simply downloading the app, scanning their ID or driver's license and taking a selfie for biometric identification, residents can onboard without the need for in-person visits.
“The Alaska Mobile ID empowers Alaska residents with a secure and convenient way to verify their identity without having to show potentially private information used on their physical ID cards, while offering the most up to date and accurate information to those verifying identities” said Lauren Whiteside, Division Operations Manager, Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles. “This new digital ID solution reflects our commitment to enhancing services for all Alaskans, citizens and businesses, making interactions safer and more streamlined without compromising on privacy or security.”
“We are proud to collaborate with the State of Alaska on this transformative project,” said Tyson Moler, Vice President for Thales Identity and Biometric Solutions in North America. “The Alaska Mobile ID enhances the convenience and experience for residents and represents a significant step forward for digital government service initiatives set forth by Governor Dunleavy and Commissioner Vrana, showcasing our dedication to delivering secure, user-centric solutions to meet the evolving needs of Alaska’s communities.”
The Alaska Mobile ID is registered with the AAMVA Digital Trust Service – making Alaska one of just nine states fully participating in the secure public-key system for validating IDs. The app represents a groundbreaking advancement in digital identity by combining strict adherence to ISO standards and AAMVA compliance for seamless interoperability with Thales' advanced mobile core security mechanisms. This ensures the two key pillars of security and interoperability, fostering trust and driving the adoption of mobile IDs.
The Alaska Mobile ID is being accepted for use by local businesses and Alaska law enforcement, offering enhanced versatility, without compromising on security. The Alaska Mobile ID is also now accepted by TSA in the Anchorage and Juneau airports.
Some recent federal initiatives, encouraging the adoption of mobile IDs, aim to streamline identity verification, while enhancing protection against online fraud and identity theft, further underscoring the significance of Alaska's innovative step forward.
