The United Kingdom's Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) collaborates with Thales to reduce the carbon footprint of its driving licences, tachograph cards and residence cards. Since 2018, Thales has reduced CO2 emissions by over one third for the 12 million cards supplied yearly to the DVLA, ensuring security, durability and value for money remain uncompromised.
Thales has implemented eco-design principles across its identity card portfolio. Examples include halving the size of contactless microcontrollers in UK tachograph and residence cards, thereby reducing CO2 emissions while maintaining application and security features.
Furthermore, Thales’ card manufacturing factories are ISO 50001 certified, emphasizing energy efficiency. These factories generate 100% of their electricity from renewable sources, contributing to over 70% of total energy consumption.
