Satellite Based Augmented System (SBAS)

Delivering accurate and reliable positioning information

  • Space
  • Navigation
  • Geolocation

Reliable positioning is no longer limited to aviation needs but now supports many other sectors. As GNSS becomes central to critical operations everywhere, ensuring trust in its accuracy and integrity is essential, and key to reducing environmental impact.

FORCES

  1. Safety of Life certified (LPV-200)

Certified for civil aviation precision LPV-200 approaches (Cat-1 equivalent), meeting the ICAO standards for integrity, accuracy, continuity, and availability.

  2. Global excellence, Equator included

World-class robustness against strong ionospheric perturbations, ensuring reliable, high-accuracy performance even in equatorial and challenging environments.

  3. Interoperability & Multi-constellations

Fully compatible with any other SBAS for seamless continuity across continent, and proven multi-constellation augmentation, demonstrated using latest-generation GNSS and ICAO standards

SBAS is a highly accurate and reliable navigation satellite system that enhances the performances of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). It augments and corrects signals to provide instantaneous, accurate and reliable positioning. Initially developed for civil aviation, SBAS is today a strategic enabler for multiple sectors, supporting both safety-critical applications and mass-market applications: emergency services, transportation, maritime navigation, agriculture, and land management.

Thales Alenia Space delivers one of the world’s most advanced SBAS solutions, combining cutting-edge technical capabilities with operational resilience validated in the most demanding conditions. Built to meet stringent aviation standards, it enhances safety, increases airspace efficiency, and reduces the need for local navigation infrastructure, reducing complexity and long-term costs. With its Safety of Life Service and Open Service, the system creates tangible value for aviation stakeholders and national economies. It provides direct benefit to many “free” users, and important indirect revenues to the country.

FEATURES

EGNOS and KASS

As prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space has played a leading role in the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) success, from design and development to deployment, certification, and operations. Operational since 2011, EGNOS provides critical navigation support by improving the accuracy and reliability of GNSS signals. It has revolutionized aviation in Europe by enabling "Safety of Life" services, allowing precision approaches for landings with vertical guidance. This has significantly improved operational safety and efficiency for European aviation operators. Thales Alenia Space has continuously enhanced the system, initially in collaboration with ESA, and now with EUSPA, to ensure its ongoing evolution and reliability.

The proven expertise of Thales Alenia Space in SBAS solutions has become a key driver for international expansion. In 2017, South Korea placed its trust in our solutions to develop KASS, the Korean Augmentation Satellite System. Operational since 2023, KASS ensures service integrity, availability and continuity while significantly improving positioning accuracy, for civil aviation as well as to other applications like public, road transport, shipping and science.

For civil aviation needs, SBAS is today worldwide recognized as the reference system for precision approach.
