How to remotely deliver mobile connectivity to eSIM-compliant devices at their first use (as they come unconnected by default), while maintaining -or even- improving the user experience subscribers were used to with traditional SIM cards?
To date, eSIM-equipped devices have had to rely on some form of primary connectivity (e.g. WiFi, smartphone tethering via Bluetooth, bootstrap...) before activating a full mobile subscription.
We intend to solve this eSIM activation and on-boarding conundrum.
Thales Instant Connect relies on a revolutionary initial mobile connectivity mechanism which allows OEMs and mobile operators to remotely and automatically provide a mobile pre-bootstrap subscription to any unconnected eSIM-ready device at first power-on.
Initial pre-bootstrap mobile connectivity for consumer & IoT devices: challenges for OEMs, mobile operators, and end-users
1. Challenges for OEMs.
When consumer device OEMs want to add mobile user experience to their devices, they need to rely on WiFi, tethering or to pre-provision devices with a connectivity subscription during the manufacturing process before activating a full mobile subscription. Thus introducing constraints to the end-users or increasing manufacturing and logistics complexity and costs.
2. Challenges for mobile operators.
When mobile operators want to sell devices with their mobile subscription, they have to rely on first Internet connectivity (e.g. WiFi or smartphone tethering via Bluetooth) to allow the mobile device to connect to their back-end to retrieve the operator's eSIM-based mobile subscription. Thus it lengthens the subscription activation process and alters the overall user experience.
Alternatively, they can rely on a profile pre-provisioned into the device in the OEM's factory. But it results with higher lead times and increased logistics complexity while adding unnecessary costs coming from devices with low activation rate.
3. Challenge for end-users.
When end-users wish to activate their eSIM-based mobile connectivity subscription onto their newly acquired eSIM-compliant device, they first have to rely on non-cellular Internet connectivity (WiFi or Bluetooth) to retrieve their final mobile subscription. It is time-consuming, possibly not free and may simply fail, providing poor and painful user experience.
A new era in effortless mobile connectivity for consumer and IoT eSIM-ready devices
Thales Instant Connect allows OEMs and mobile operators to remotely and automatically provide initial mobile connectivity to genuinely offline eSIM-enabled devices at power on, wherever they are, while drastically simplifying OEMs' supply chain and enhancing the user experience.
eSIM-ready IoT devices can now connect to a mobile network even if they haven't been pre-provisioned with a mobile subscription during the manufacturing process, and don't need any sort of initial connection.
This revolutionary pre-bootstrap solution relies on a disruptive technology that leverages the signalling network to retrieve a first initial mobile subscription that will grant mobile connectivity to further download operational mobile subscriptions.
Only Thales provides such an initial mobile connectivity solution for mobile and consumer IoT devices; there isn't any equivalent on the market.
Connecting an eSIM-compliant device to the web becomes a no-brainer
1. Benefits for OEMs.
OEMs can now quickly provide mobile connectivity to new devices at first power-on while avoiding to preload mobile connectivity subscription bootstrap during the manufacturing process.
It allows to drastically simplify supply chains, shorten production time, improve time-to-market delivery lead times and save costs.
OEMs can now make available in-built mobile connectivity to any device, easily and faster, providing their final end-users with a seamless user experience for accessing the Internet wherever they are.
2. Benefits for mobile operators.
Mobile operators can now fully control the delivery of their connectivity data plan to their eSIM-ready device users, increasing customer stickiness/loyalty. It greatly simplifies the activation of mobile subscriptions onto eSIM-compliant devices of their users.
It facilitates the pervasiveness of cellular technology into existing non-connected devices (smartwatches, wristbands, PCs…) and new categories of devices (pet trackers, coffee machines….), thus increasing the number of mobile connections per user.
It introduces a new way for mobile networks operators (MNOs) to activate the eSIM connectivity without WiFi/Bluetooth and without assigning the network resources ahead of time, these are only assigned when they are needed. It prevents MNOs from preloading profiles in devices with low activation rates.
3. Benefits for end-users.
End-users can enjoy true out-of-the-box user experience when activating their eSIM subscription on their new eSIM-compliant devices.
This solution dramatically simplifies eSIM subscription activation:
It avoids looking for a WiFi hotspot and set up the WiFi connection configuration in the device settings before activating a cellular subscription.
It also saves them time and hassle by avoiding to use smartphone tethering.
Such an ambitious purpose could be matched only with the support of major key players. That's what we've started doing.
"Qualcomm is excited to see the Thales Instant Connect solution eSIM and its potential to simplify eSIM sourcing for OEMs and the ability to quickly connect Snapdragon-powered Always Connected PCs and other devices for consumers and enterprise", said Miguel Nunes, Senior Director Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies.
“PCs with LTE connectivity improve a user’s experience by giving them productivity wherever they are, and we have a longstanding relationship with Thales to help realize this goal. Extending this collaboration will enable easy integration of truly instantaneous mobile connectivity into all Windows PCs. We look forward to the first wave of devices incorporating Instant Connect technology accelerating this exciting transformation", said Shai Guday, Partner Group Program Manager, Microsoft Corp.
Besides, Thales earns the prestigious award of "Global IoT Innovation Vendor of the Year" in 2020 from the IoT Breakthrough Award program for its entire eSIM Management offer, including Thales Instant Connect.
