CONTEXT AND CHALLENGES

The European satellite navigation system Galileo has 500 million users around the world. As well as its open-access service, Galileo offers Galileo PRS (Public Regulated Service), which is reserved for public service users and provides the armed forces, police, firefighters and other emergency services with a permanently available, high-precision, high-quality and highly secure satellite positioning signal. 

SOLUTION

Thales developed KMC Space, a cryptographic key management system specifically designed to guarantee communications security for Galileo PRS users. KMC Space provides:

• A connection to the European key management infrastructure that handles national key distribution to PRS receivers 
• Access to a key distribution point for national user groups
• End-to-end management across all stages in the key management process
• Accreditations for the highest levels of security
